As part of its long term growth strategy, Travelers seeks a Vice President - Information Technology Production Operations and Enterprise Applications for its Business Insurance IT organization. Reporting to the Business Insurance Chief Information Officer, this position will play a critical role in managing the $260M annual technology investment in Business Insurance across multiple domestic and international development locations.
He / she will be accountable for overseeing the Business Insurance technology production operations organization ensuring delivery of high-quality application production services that meet or exceed business service levels; managing all development for the Business Insurance legacy production portfolio; driving the implementation of enterprise best practices for production support and development in support of operational efficiency, cost effectiveness and service delivery improvement goals; leading the development and execution of a workforce management strategy to ensure the production operations workforce is positioned for the future to support both existing and new production applications; and driving the application simplification agenda to retire obsolete applications.
We are seeking an energetic, accomplished, technology leader with a strong blend of business and technology acumen. He/she will have strong leadership skills and a track record of leading large scale application development and production support operations, preferably in the P&C or financial services industry. He/she must demonstrate the ability to maximize the leverage of enterprise, line of business and global sourcing partner technology capabilities to deliver high quality services in a cost effective manner with a focus on continuous operational efficiency improvements.
The ideal candidate must be comfortable working in a complex business and technology environment, with a demonstrated record of building strong business and technology relationships. This individual must be seen as a strategic partner, thought leader and trusted advisor by his/her business and technology counterparts, with a proven ability to work well with senior operating executives. Finally, this individual must be a strong people leader, recognized for creating followership amongst his/her team, business partners and peers with a solid record of attracting, retaining and developing talent.
Position Responsibilities
Key accountabilities for this position will include:
- Managing the delivery of production application services for the Business Insurance application portfolio ensuring key business service levels are met or exceeded, with a constant focus on driving unit cost efficiency and service quality improvements.
- Working closely with enterprise production service providers supporting Business Insurance including Enterprise IT, Infrastructure Services and Corporate Systems to ensure high quality delivery of all technology production services for Business Insurance.
- Manage the high quality development and support for enterprise shared applications.
- Manage all modifications to targeted Business Insurance application portfolio including break fix, enhancements and project development in a high quality, cost effective manner.
- Supporting the development of the Business Insurance IT strategic plan and leading the execution of the production operations components.
- Drive the Business Insurance application simplification strategy including management of the retirement roadmap for obsolete systems.
- Defining and executing the process for bringing new strategic systems, as they mature, into the production management portfolio.
- Lead the development and execution of a workforce management strategy to ensure production operations is positioned to support both current and future systems.
- Drive the implementation and continuous improvement of key production operation processes leveraging best practices and capabilities across the enterprise.
- Provide robust operational metrics and performance reporting leveraging enterprise best practices and capabilities.
- Work with other lines of business as well as the enterprise to evaluate and take advantage of industry best practices (e.g. ITIL, CMMI, etc.) to drive consistency and continuous improvement of production services.
- Focal point within Business Insurance IT for leading the process to identify and leverage applications more holistically across the Travelers enterprise.
- Financial management of the $90 million direct and indirect expense for the production portfolio and 250+ FTE with a strong focus on application total cost of ownership efficiency improvements.
The ideal candidate brings extensive practical experience in the following areas: - Senior leadership of multiple IT disciplines in a strategic development organization.
- Leadership of large scale systems development projects and production operations.
- Development of strategies for systems portfolio simplification and decommissioning of obsolete systems.
- Establishing and maintaining strong business and technology partnerships driving to successful outcomes.
- Familiarity with the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) or similar IT service management framework to drive service management improvements.
- Leadership in an IT shop utilizing both leading edge and legacy technologies.
- Successful leadership working in highly matrixed and dynamic environments.
- Strong planning experience resulting in achievable plans supported by sound resource and demand forecast plans.
- Vendor management.
- Organizational planning and change management.
Other Skills Technical Knowledge: A solid knowledge of technology capabilities, and a keen interest in staying abreast of emerging technology trends.
Business Knowledge & Partnership: Strong working knowledge of the insurance industry, most notably in the area of P&C. Proposes and delivers solutions that make sense and are in line with the future technology direction.

Results are reviewed with next level manager for clarification according to predefined objectives.
Financial Management: Manages organizational and project budgets including the tracking of actuals to budget and reporting to stakeholders.
