Job Description:


SUMMARY: Develop and maintain high quality information products that facilitate external and internal customer product familiarity and ease of use.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESinclude the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Create user manuals, maintenance manuals, parts and schematics manuals, and other information products.
2. Follow style guides and prepare grammatically clean information products.
3. Perform peer reviews and coordinate subject matter expert reviews.
4. Work as part of a technical communication team.
5. Translate marketing specifications and feature changes into information products with clear objectives.
6. Interview and work closely with engineers and other technical personnel to ensure accuracy and completeness of information at the level required for the intended audience.
7. Responsible for researching, designing, and developing a variety of documentation for different audiences ranging from novice user to highly technical user.
8. Research and draw relevant information from vendor documentation, engineering specifications, and existing product documentation as appropriate.
9. Effectively use appropriate authoring techniques, tools, standards, and processes to create information products.
10. Coordinate delivery of documentation to align with project rollouts.
11. Validate information products.
12. Coordinate, track, and report the progress of multiple projects against defined schedules.
13. Provide project timeline and cost estimates per customer requests.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITES: Ability to coach or mentor interns or less experienced personnel.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree in technical communication or related area from an accredited college or university and 0-2 years of experience in an engineering/manufacturing environment. Professional certification is desirable.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Knowledge of Loram machinery or comparable heavy equipment and railroad track structure construction.
1. Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices and procedures.
2. Experience with creating graphics; familiar with layout principles, and design concepts; knowledge of and expertise with templates.
3. Ability to interact with internal and external customers in a professional manner.
4. Strong writing skills and knowledge of information development standards, processes, and tools. Responsible for creating clear, concise, standardized grammatically correct content.
5. Keep abreast of information development industry changes, trends, and best practices. Participate in initiatives to improve the team’s practices, processes, and deliverable.
6. Ability to proactively find, understand, organize, and present technical information clearly, learn new software and tools quickly, work with a wide range of subject matter experts, manage multiple projects and deadlines, and work independelty with limited supervision.
7. Ability to plan and accomplish goals under aggressive schedules.
8. Display an entrepreneurial, “get it done” attitude.

COMPUTER SKILLS: Ability to use computer keyboards and screens to access information necessary to perform the Essential Duties and Responsiblites listed agove.

Expertise with authoring tools and portions of the product line (FrameMaker, Adobe Illustrator, photo editing software).

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, supplier documentation, engineering drawings, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit or kneel; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is often required to walk distances up to 1000 feet on rough terrain.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is required to hear normal audible discussions and warning systems.
